Services for Rhett butler Darnell, the 19 year old former star quarterback of the DeKalb bears who was killed in a motorcycle mishap Sunday evening, will be this morning in DeKalb, Texas. Meanwhile, Craig Hazelwood, 18 also of DeKalb, Texas. remains in serious, but stable, condition in the intensive care unit at Wadley Hospital with injuries received in the accident. Grave side services for Darnell will be at 11 a.m. at Woodman Cemetery with Rev. Winston Foens officiation. Burial will be under the direction of Bates-Rolf Funeral Home of DeKalb, Texas.
Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Owen L. Darnell of DeKalb, Texas; a sister, Julia Darnell of DeKalb, Texas; his maternal grandmother Mrs Selenia McCray of DeKalb,Texas; and his paternal grandmother Mrs Madene Darnell of Garland,Texas.; A hospital spokesman said Hazelwood suffered a traumatic amputation of his left arm, as well as a fractures of both legs and minor injuries, in the crash. A spokesman for the department of Public Safety said the exact cause of the accident has yet to be determined. the mishap occurred about sundown Sunday when the cycle on which the two were riding apparently left U.S. Highway 259 just south of the Red River bridge and went underneath a highway sign. Darnell's head struck one of the sign support post. The two were not discovered until about 7 P.M. when a passing motorist noticed the cycle and found Darnell and Hazelwood lying in the grass nearby. According to companions who had been with them at the river that afternoon, the two had started home before dark because the cycle did not have a headlight.
