Focus of the Show: Paintings made by a Lego RobotPermanently on view: Paintings I, Paintings II, Paintings III, DrawingsFor Immediate Release: Image for publication https://tomlohre.com/images/mooney.jpg The Story: In 1987 Tom started work on a machine that painted. First he developed a painting manner a machine could use then he used Lego's MindStorm Robotic system to build the machine to use the painting manner. On January 5th, 2007 at 9PM Tom cracked the computer code to write the program and spent January, February and March building the machine and writing the program. Come see art that is like no other till Oct .1st. As it turns out the machine is like a lathe. It has to be attended and a 16" x 20" painting takes 9 hours to complete with 1540 individual dots. The machine goes to each spot, receives the color from the computer and applies it. Each painting starts as a very simple image where each pixel is one dot on the painting. The resolution of the dot is about 5/8" so the image is very difficult to see unless you step back about twenty feet. The image the computer uses is a very simplified image, distilling a image down to eight different colors. For a face the colors are medium blue, white, light yellow, medium tan flesh, medium red flesh, dark green, medium dark brown and dark brown. The colors are prepared ahead of time and applied one dot at a time while the robot addresses each place.
